The CSI-NYC is dedicated to supporting the educational mission of Northeastern’s New York City campus by providing students with opportunities for meaningful learning experiences outside of the classroom through social, cultural, recreational, and leadership engagement. These experiences are grounded in the following areas: Leadership Development, Student Involvement, Community Engagement, Student Engagement & Orientation.

Northeastern NYC has organizations for community, academics, performance, culture — or anything you can dream of.

Getting involved on campus is one of the best ways to make the most out of your college experience. By getting involved, you will meet other students who share similar interests to you who you may not have met otherwise, you will open yourself up to new ways of thinking and experiencing the world around you, and you will grow and develop in may ways that a classroom environment can’t provide.

Interested in starting your own student organization?

Starting a new organization is a relatively easy process but it does involve a few different steps in order to complete it successfully. The CSI-NYC team works closely with interested students to determine the purpose and mission of their proposed new organization. Once ideas are formalized, we will walk you through the necessary paperwork to complete the New Student Organization Form. Formal proposals are then forwarded on to the Student Government Association where the full Senate will vote on the activation of your new group.

All approved submissions in the Fall will begin activity as a student organization in the Spring semester.

Step 0: What does Northeastern NYC already offer?

Chances are if you’ve made it this far, you’ve already checked out what Northeastern NYC currently offers. In case you haven’t, though, take a look through our roster of existing organizations to see if the group you’re looking for already exists. If we do have an active organization, simply contact them to get involved. If a group that you would like to be a part of is currently inactive, contact the Assistant Director for Leadership & Involvement to begin the easy process of reactivation.

Step 1: I have an idea for an organization. Now what?

This is fantastic news! We’re always excited to welcome new and imaginative clubs and organizations. Below are your action items now that you’re starting a brand new registered student organization:

BUILD YOUR TEAM

  1. Find three additional people who would excitedly join the organization’s executive board: president (likely you), vice president, secretary, treasurer
  2. Find a full-time faculty or staff member who would be interested in serving as the advisor
  3. Find six additional students interested in being general members

DRAFT YOUR PAPERWORK

  1. Write your new organization’s mission statement, detailing what makes this organization different from all the rest
  2. Create a constitution

SUBMIT YOUR INFORMATION

Complete the online on Engage, which includes uploading the roster, mission statement and constitution.

After submission, the online process will route the form accordingly to your advisor, to the SDA staff and then to the Student Government Association (SGA) for final review.

Step 2: The SGA review

Many times, members of the executive board will be invited to an upcoming SGA meeting to further explain the purpose of the organization and to answer any questions the SGA Senate may have. The SGA has the final approval power on whether or not a potential organization should be founded on campus.

The Student Government Association executive board and senate are the final authorizing body for the formal recognition of student organizations. When reviewing a new organization, the SGA will likely look for the following:

  • Is the mission of this organization unique from anything previously established at Northeastern NYC?
  • How will this organization serve the student body and/or the broader NYC community?
  • Does the mission embrace Northeastern NYC’s mission of embracing and celebrating inclusion?
  • Does this organization have the potential to thrive year-to-year?

Once the application is received by SGA, a representative will contact you with an invitation to attend an upcoming meeting in order to answer any questions that may arise.

This process can take up to two weeks to complete.

Step 3: The SGA approved my organization. What’s next?

First of all, congratulations!

Once the SGA has approved the group as a registered student organization, the Assistant Director for Leadership & Involvement will ask to meet with the new officers to review the myriad resources available to support the success of student organizations. We’ll go through the benefits of recognized student organization status, how to request funding, how to plan events, taking advantage of the SOS (Student Organization Suite) resources and how to engage the student body as an official student organization of Northeastern NYC, just to name a few.

This training typically lasts about one hour and is required for all officers to attend.
